This paper reconsiders the origin of Eastern and Western culture and establishes the foundational patterns of each culture. For this, the paper compares and contrasts Western culture with Eastern one. This methodology is a typical way of culture learning since the awareness of target culture always comes through recognizing the differences between the target culture and the native one. In terms of the recent developments of cultural psychology, this paper delves into the historical environments of the West and the East and develops basic cultural patterns that are key to the understanding of each culture. The paper first sets up individualism vs. collectivism as the general category of Western and Eastern culture. And based on this category, the paper divides it into three small categories, such as the view of the world, the view of the self, and the view of social relations, and then examines each of them with a set of cultural patterns. These cultural patterns work as the objectives of culture learning, indicating what English learners should learn and how to learn it. These cultural patterns also solve the problem of current cultural education, that is, how to learn the enormity of cultural contents effectively. Instead of trying to learn all of them, we only need to learn the key patterns since the enormous cultural contents are merely the products by the workings of such cultural patterns themselves.
