The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between elementary school student's cognitive development levels and frequency of plant observation. Students involved in this study were 290 sixth graders of nine different classes. After Their cognitive levels were assessed by GALT, they constructed an observation sheet about garden balsam and plantain lily, and the reports were analyzed. The data were collected on the frequency of observing the shapes, the colors, the tactile impressions, and the smells of the two different types of plants. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the students observed the leaves of the plants most frequently, among the three organs of the plants. Second The analysis of the observing frequency of several plants' properties, such as shape, color, tactile impression, smell and measurement, told us the shape and the color of the plants were observed the most. Third, concerning the relationship between the cognitive development level and the plant observation frequency, the observation frequency at the formal operational level tended to be the first, that at the transitional period was followed, and that at the concrete operational level was the last. One-way ANOVA was utilized to judge if there was a statistically significant difference among their observation frequencies, and the results revealed that the students' observing frequencies about the two plants were different with statistical significance.
