The purpose of this study was to analyze 1 ∼ 18 months old pre-linguistic vocal development with production pattern, then, to provide basic information for establishing systematical structured rehabilitation program to induce normal vocal development for Korean hearing impaired infants. Thirty normal hearing infants participated in study. At first, this study analyzed early vocal development of 1 ~ 18 months infants to analyze normal hearing normal Korean infants' vocal development according to the SAEVD-R. They were divided into six age groups, 1 ∼ 2, 3 ∼ 5, 6 ∼ 8, 9 ∼ 12, 13 ∼ 15, 16 ∼ 18 months. The results showed that early vocal development of 1 ~ 18 month infants with normal hearing produced plenty of the lower level vocal productions, such as vegetative sound, crying, quasi-resonant nuclei decreased. But the higher level vocal productions, such as vowels, consonants, and monosyllables increased as they grow. Infants started to produce vowels, /a/(/ㅏ/), /w/(/ㅡ/), /e/(/ㅔ/), from 3 month, /ʌ/(/ㅓ/), /o/(/ㅗ/), /ɛ/(/ㅐ/), /i/(/ㅣ/), /u/(/ㅜ/) at 4 ∼ 5 months, and /wi/(/ㅟ/), /ɸ/(/ㅚ/), /ju/(/ㅠ/), /wʌ/(/ㅝ/), /jo/(/ㅛ/) diphthongs at 16∼18 months. When the consonant production was classified according to the place of articulation, the bilabial sounds, such as /m/(/ㅁ/) and /b/(/ㅂ/) appeared first followed by velar sounds, such as /g/(/ ㄱ/), /m/(/ㅁ/) and labiodental sounds, such as /n/(/ㄴ/) and /d/(/ㄷ/). Based on the results of this study, characteristics of early vocal development pattern for normal Korean infants can be sorted. This study and other previous studies suggest that SAEVD-R is inadequate to assess and analyze Korean infants' vocal development accurately because it is focused on English mother tongue babys' early vocal development. And it showed slight difference on the order and amount of production for early vocalization. Further, the Korean assessment tool for early vocal development for Korean infants should be developed.
