The purpose of this qualitative study was to look into the exploration and play of 12- to 18-month-old infants in an infant education and care setting, focusing on the beginning, development, and ending of their exploration and play. The participants of this study were five infants (12- to 18-month-olds) attending an infant class in K childcare center in Seoul, and the data were generated through observations, interviews, and related documents. The results of this study are as follows. First, the exploration and play of the infants started by selecting a toy for himself/herself, by coming across a toy, by becoming interested in actions of peers or teachers, and by accepting teachers’ suggestions. Second, the exploration and play of the infants developed through exploring the characteristics of the toys, through alternating between exploration and play, and through utilizing the toys. Third, the exploration and play of the infants ended by encountering another object of attention, by needing physical or emotional care, by having conflicts with peers, and by not getting timely support. These results imply the need for an in-depth understanding of infants’ exploration and play, and the significance of interacting with infants and developing a curriculum for infants based on understanding.
