The purpose of this study is to find out if KakaoTalk, the most popular smartphone social networking service (SNS) application in Korea, is a viable medium to teach English conversation skills. Whereas most previous research studied the use of smartphone applications in a supporting role and in teaching text-related areas, this research focuses on the teaching of speaking skills and using the app as the main medium as an attempt to open doors to learners who are unable to afford offline classes. Ten participants were involved in this month-long daily experiment, in which both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect data, including pre- and post-experiment questionnaires and interviews. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, learners initially had positive perceptions towards using KakaoTalk for studying English conversation, although they had never used it in that way before. Second, seven participants agreed that face-to-face classes were equally or more effective but preferred KakaoTalk English lessons because they saves time and money and require more concentrated participation. Third, due to technical issues, KakaoTalk can work as an alternative only when offline classes are not possible and both parties are aware and willing to compensate for its limitations.
