This paper is intended to show how characters of text, author, reader, and the method of reading were changed by the prominent spread of printing culture in China after 16 century, through analyzing the differences between Zhuxi(朱熹)'s canon reading in 12c and Jin-Shengtan(金聖嘆)'s novel reading in 17c. Chinese canon, as the words of the sage had been regarded as sacred and principal texts to readers. So readers were forced to accept the fixed and unified meaning from canon and special commentators played an important role in this field. Zhuxi offered oral and intensive reading method to the readers. These situations reflected the beginning stage of printing culture, or pre-printing culture. On the other hand, printing culture was prominently diffused after 16 century. Chinese vernacular novels were supplied like a great flood. Characters of text, author, reader, and the method of reading were changed on this unprecedented condition. We can find that the method of novel reading was changed gradually during several centuries, from oral reading to silent and private reading. Authority of novel' author could not be found, because most of them hided as an anonym. So novel reader could have the right to interpret the text variously according to their will and desire. I think that literary field surrounding Chinese vernacular novel after 16 century was based on relatively more personalized society, in comparison with the previous era. I also think that this conditions which was changed in 16-17c showed a transitional stage toward modern Chinese literature. I wish that my discussion is able to help to deepen a bit superficial analysis which has been discussed until now.
