Since the 4th Century, Koguryo had accelerated the Southward Advance Policy, by moving her capital to Pyeongyang and christening the name of country ‘Proto-Koryo’(427). The historical development of the country in the name of “Proto-Koryo” was very significant because she, thereafter, gained hegemonic supremacy over Northeast Asia and shaped her own world. However, that name has been forgotten for a long time. The reason is that the author of History of Three Kingdoms(三國史記) did not write down the name. But it is true that some epigraph or some history books like Tongijeon(Eastern Barbarian Section, 東夷傳) inform us of the existence of the name. As well, the name has a great importance in that it represents the age of full maturity of Koguryo. Therefore, we should not only restore the name but also understand its historical significance. It is true that the conventional preconception of “unified Koryo” now makes us name the proto-Koryo “Koguryo in the Peongyang period”. It is also true, however, that the name of Koryo is traced bak to “Proto-Koryo”. It obviously originates in the Southward Advance Policy of Koguryo. So, there is some truth in asserting that the origin of the name of 'Korea’ may go back to this period as well. This paper is an attempt to investigate the diverse aspects of the Proto-Koguryo’s own world to think over its historical significance. For that purpose, the purview of consideration of the paper includes the change in the shape of fortresses, burial mounds, murals after Koguryo advanced southwards. The paper also focuses on some similarities in the inner minds of Koguryo people as represented in clothing, food, house and Buddhist and Confucian institutions and thoughts (a species of national identity). At this point was made clear the bifurcation of the early and late stages of Koguryo.
