A study of Korean Affixes in Syntactic PerspectiveShi, Chung-Kon(KAIST)The goal of this paper is to study Korean affixes in syntactic perspective. This paper argues against the traditional position that affixes are divided into inflectional affix and derivational affix and propose that we need to build the new affix system in Korean. I approach to the goal with two main ways as followings; First, finding the position of inflectional affix, which so called 'particle/ending' in Korean, in Korean grammar and the syntactic properties of it. Second, catching the syntactic properties of derivational affix. the syntactic tradition of 'particle/ending' came from traditional grammar in Korean. The origin of tradition can be found in distinction a substantive from an expletive in old Korean. I argue that the position of grammar of affixes must be equal in Korean. I show the diversity of studies on syntactic category in Korean 'particle/ending'. And I suggest the lexicalization of syntactic constructions in which 'particle/ending' are included. In the syntactic properties of derivational affix, this paper focuses on two representative examples as followings; adjective affix '-tap-' and adverbial affix '-i'. I argue that these affixes are regarded as syntactic affixes, not derivational affixes.
