English education in Korea began more than 100 years ago and has evolved into a dynamic area of inquiry. It is indeed an appropriate time to conduct a comprehensive and rigorous review of the history of English teaching/learning practices in the Korean context. This systematic overview is important because it enables us to better understand what we have done in the past and what we should do in the future, and is possible through research synthesis and meta-analysis. This paper discusses three defining features of research synthesis and illustrates its step-by-step procedures, with a particular focus on meta-analysis. Several suggestions are also made for primary researchers, including: 1) the need to report basic descriptive statistics as well as standardized effect sizes and confidence intervals; 2) the possibility of conducting research synthesis in scholarly activities for theses and dissertations; and 3) the importance of acting and thinking synthetically in the academic environment.
