Louis Horst was a significant contributor to the partnership between music and dance through his application of musical knowledge to dance choreography and through his insight into the problems of the choreographer, as revealed by his teaching and the music he composed for dance accompaniment. Furthermore, Horst demonstrated his critical ability to render impartial judgment for dance based upon sound principles of music. When he worked as a musical director for Denishawn School, he influenced on the use of music in the dance company, as his technical knowledge provided an essential basis in the development of "music visualization" while he encouraged to use classical music for dance. It was also he who advised Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman to separate from Denishawn and to take on a new dance vocabulary of their own. Horst, as a musician, a teacher, and a critic, led innovatively the young American dancers who were struggling against traditionalism, Horst's important contributions to dance can be summarized briefly as follows: . As a musician, he suggested an ideal, efficient collaboration between the composer and the choreographer while illuminating the important relationship between dance and music. . As a teacher, he introduced creative method of dance composition utilizing the elements of music through the study of the dance forms based upon those of music. . As a ciritic, he suggested new rules of dance criticism applying musical principles. Horst's unique and diverse approach in dance world was very influential that he brought up a large majority of pupils. As a key figure in the growth of the modern dance in America, Horst and his theoretical concepts had a direct bearing upon the creative shaping of the contemporary dance art. Eventually, Louis Horst, the musician, promoted a closer relationship between dance and music, thus elevated the artistic level of the dance.
