《Samguksagi(三國史記)》and 《Samgukyusa(三國遺事)》are essential historical books for studying korean ancient history. Researchers have analyzed how to these two were created. In fact, they are based on domestic materials and Chinese records.
Besides Chinese official history, 《Cefuyuangui(冊府元龜)》and 《Zizhitongjian(資治通鑑)》were also used as key resources. Among the chinese records, this study focuses on 《Tongdian(通典)》. This history book describing chinese decrees and regulations was written by Duyou(杜佑) during Tang dynasty and it became a must-read for officers. In Goryeo(高麗), 《Tongdian》arrived at least from middle of dynasty and description of the Korean ancient states had received attention from intellectuals.
Some cases referred to 《Tongdian》as the forms of direct quotation and indirect quotation are observed in 《Samguksagi》written by Kim Busik(金富軾). 〈Section of Musics(樂志)〉, 〈Section of Clothes(色服志)〉, and 〈Section of Geography(地理志)〉 belong to the former case and were utilized with Chinese history books to supplement contents. The later cases are also found, especially in 〈Bongi(本紀)〉.
Likewise, 《Samgukyusa》also quoted 《Tongdian》which was one of the most important materials. However, some quotations are slightly different from original text. It is likely that 《Samgukyusa》 referred to 《Tongkao(通考)》which is 《Wenxiantonkao(文獻通考)》 for Balhae(渤海) part. Ilyeon(一然) still considered 《Tongdian》as historial authority.
《Tongdian》was one of the major references for intellectuals during Goryeo dynasty. It is assumed that the historical book had been introduced at an earlier stage and became usable source during the late times. Compliers of 《Samguksagi》and 《Samgukyusa》also considered the book in the same way. Its value of historical materials and authority were highly regarded. Therefore, its contents were reflected in their records.
