The purpose of this study is to analyze the dental treatment records of the disabled in Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, Korea for five years and utilize them as basic data for expanding medical services for the disabled. The electronic medical records of first oral examination for five years at department of pediatric dentistry were analyzed targeting the patients with mental retardation, brain lesions, autism, and mental disorder.
In case of patients with single disability, it was found that there were 86 patients with mental retardation (55.1%), 28 patients with brain lesions (17.9%), 18 patients with autism (11.5%), and 2 patients with mental disorder (1.3%). In method of behavior management, there were 205 sedations (51.3%), 124 tell-show-do or protective stabilizations (31.0%), and 71 general anesthesia (17.8%). In case of sedation, most were midazolam intramuscular (192 cases, 93.7%), and waiting time after administration was 23.5 min (± 9.5 min) on average, and the treatment time was 36.3 min (± 17.2 min) on average. In general anesthesia, anesthesia time was 233.1 min (± 99.0 min) on average, and treatment time was 195.5 min (± 96.8 min) on average.
Dental treatment specialized in the characteristics and demands of the disabled is very important, and social support for this is necessary. This study may be used as reference data in Korea for expanding medical services for the disabled in the future.
