This study investigates data on the language use collected from surveys and interviews with nursing teachers at daycare centers that provide after-class care and education to elementary school students. Based on the on-site research in both countries, Korea and Japan, the study establishes a correlation between language uses and the meaning of the daycare centers in both countries, and to find the social relationship between caregivers and children. In greeting behavior between Korean caregivers and children, it was found that the act of greeting was rare at the scene of coming to and leaving the center. It was because it focused on taking attendance to go to another class after school. In Japanese, the child says ‘ただいま’ and the daycare teacher says ‘お帰りなさい’ when they came back home. In terms of honorific action, there are no polite language between caregivers and children in Japanese, but there are in Korea. This is a result of the differences in the social contexts of the two countries: the extension of school education in Korea and the second family in Japan. It can be analyzed that the social contexts of these two countries directly have an impact on language behavior between caregivers and children. Furthermore, through the results of language behavior between daycare teachers and children in both countries, we could see that the social relationship between them in Korea is vertical relationship while that in Japan is more horizontal. The implication of this paper is that in seeking the right direction of development, daycare centers in Korea do not only reduce private education costs and expand educational opportunities on the extension of school education, but also relieve children’s academic stress and fulfill their role as a “field” of life to foster creativity through play.
