In the early stage of the Japanese Invasions (1592-1598) especially from January to March in 1593, Chosŏn pursued certain combined operations with Ming Southern Units (南兵), the second of which were infantry troops composed mainly of shieldmen, spearmen, and swordmen with the support of firearms and cannons. Specifically, as a solution to the impasse at the front lines since the second month of 1593 the Chosŏn court proposed joint operations in which 10,000 infantry of the units would sail on the Han River to attack not only the Japanese troops at Kyŏngsŏng (Seoul) in the rear but also those in its environs, including the areas south of the Han River, while the Chosŏn army would cover the flank from all directions, which was rejected by the Ming armies. This article delves into the way the Chosŏn court took vigorous efforts to form a military partnership with the Southern Units and repel immediately and fully the brutal aggression of the Japanese armies. The move of the Chosŏn court as above, I contend, vividly displays a complicated yet unveiled tension between Chosŏn and the Ming in terms of how to finish the war. Finally, this approach will help further develop long-term comparative research that illuminates the concrete mechanisms of conflict and cooperation among the Northeast Asian countries, including Chosŏn and the Ming, in a few centuries after the establishment of the Southern Units in the mid-sixteenth century.
