This paper surveyed and compared and studied the reality of awareness on linguistic taboos, of 1,252 college students and the general public in three countries, Korea, China, and Japan, that fall under the Chinese character cultural sphere. The main results are as follows:
(1) The phrases, Once again and Again and again, that are used frequently at wedding ceremonies, appeared to be tabooed in Japan only.
(2) Saying drop or slip to people who will have examinations were more tabooed in Korea and Japan than in China.
(3) While Chinese do not have any taboo on even or odd numbers of money gift amount for weddings, Koreans and Japanese still have a strong thought that it should be odd numbers.
(4) The number 4 and writing one」s name in red color were tabooed in Korea, China, and Japan, and appeared to be a common taboo of the Chinese character cultural sphere.
