This study explores the relationship between the civic engagement of immigrant youths and their ethnic identity development. A qualitative multiple case study of three Korean immigrant youths in the United States was conducted in order to explore the manner in which ethnic identity influences Korean immigrant youths’ civic engagement while determining how the civic engagement experiences influence their ethnic identity development. Findings indicate that the ethnic identity of three Korean immigrant adolescents promoted their civic engagement. They participated in activities that were closely related to their self-identified ethnic identity. Through this civic engagement participation, three immigrant youths developed their ethnic identity. It also provided them with opportunities to search who they are and who they would like to be in terms of their ethnic identity. Given the paucity of research on immigrant youths’ voices and their experiences, this study added Korean immigrants’ unique voices to the discourse that focuses on ethnic identity and civic engagement. In addition, by identifying the bidirectional relationship between civic engagement and ethnic identity development, this study provides insights on how to foster immigrant youths’ civic engagement and further the development of their ethnic identity by encouraging their civic engagement participation.
