The popular notion of "textiles" includes fibers (natural or manufactured), yarns, cordage, fabrics (woven, knit, nonwovens), and apparel , In contrast, the textile industry, when narrowly defined, limits itself as the activity that converts fibers into yarns, cordage and fabrics, and when broadly defined tends to also include the sectors that produce manufactured (not natural) fibers as well as apparel. In the public mind (including international agencies, governments and the media), and even in the academe, the distinction between the narrow and the broad definitions of the industry Is often moot. This paper offers an historical review of basis of the terminology associated with "fiber", "textile" and the "textile industry:′It is shown that many of the perceived structures of the industry have emanated from the nature and scope of these terminologies. The following schematic resulting from a US National Academy of Engineering study, in 1983, offers the traditional structure of the textile industry, sometimes called "textile complex:′ While this may have been reasonable then, the present scope of the "industry or complex" is dramatically different and significantly more inclusive. As a result of the evolution of new fibers, materials, processes and markets, we assert that a new "ENGINEERING WITH FIBERS" (EwF)(중략)
