This study examines changes in intergenerational education among Korean resident aliens in Japan. Specifically, the study asked Korean resident aliens in Japan what kind of education they have received from their parents at home and abroad, what kind of education they are providing to their children, what kind of education they want to offer to future generations living in Japan, and what kind of support they think they need from the Japanese government and/or the Korean government.
The survey results show that the respondents received ethnic education mainly in their families with the aid from their parents. As parents taught them, ethnic education was still carried out at home. Meanwhile, what is different from the previous generation is that when they give their children education about their native culture and national identity, it no longer stays within home but also goes beyond it. This is thought to be related to the social background of the Japanese society, which is the host society. According to the survey, the respondents hope to take a step further from the education about national identity and culture at home and raise their children as international citizens with the awareness of human rights.
