한국 남동해역에서 취득된 고해상 탄성파탐사자료의 해석에 의하면 연구해역에 분포하는 후 제4기 해침 퇴적층은 6개의 퇴적단위로 구성된다. 서로 다른 특징을 갖는 퇴적단위는 침식면에 의해 분리되는 2개의 퇴적단위(paralic and marine units)로 구분된다. 침식면위에 놓이는 paralic unit의 경우는 연안침식 작용으로부터 보존된 퇴적단위로 침식수로 충진퇴적단위, 고 해빈-연안 퇴적단위, 하구역퇴적단위 등을 포함한다. paralic unit의 상부는 침식면의 특징을 가지며 그 위에marine unit이 놓인다. Marine unit은 해침에 따른 연안침식에 의해 생석된 퇴적물로 구성되며 중간대륙붕 및 내대륙붕 사질퇴적층, 중간대륙붕 사퇴퇴적층 등이 포함된다. 연구해역에 분포하는 6개의 퇴적단위로 구성되는 해침퇴적층의 형성은 해침기간 동안 상대적 해수면 상승, 퇴적물 공급 및 해양 퇴적기작의 영향에 의해 조절되었다.
