The purpose of this article is to examine the literary and theological meaning of Leviticus 18-20 within the Book of Leviticus. For this purpose, a couple of presuppositions are necessary. First, Leviticus is a unified book under the themes of cultic holiness and ethical holiness. Second, the repetition of motifs, terms, and concepts, which appear in the literary units, will be used for the analysis of the literary structure.
Leviticus consists of five literary units before and after its center (chaps. 18-20), and these units make a chiastic structure in terms of cultic and ethical contexts. The literary structure is as follows: A (1:1-9:24), sacrifices offered to Yahweh // A’ (25:1-27:34), offerings belonging to Yahweh; B (10:1-20), pollution of the tabernacle and ethical crimes // B’(24:10-23), pollution of the name of Yahweh and ethical crimes; C (11:1-15:33), cultic holiness in the camp of Israel // C’ (24:1-9), cultic holiness in the sanctuary; D (16:1-34), the Day of Atonement and ethical crimes // D’ (23:1-44), religious festivals and ethical crimes; E (17:1-16), regulations on animals for food and their blood // E’ (21:1-22:33), regulations on food for Yahweh, priests, and laypersons; F (18:1-20:27), regulations on grave sins which result in ethical uncleanliness.
The analysis of the literary structure of Leviticus reveals several theological meanings. First, the society envisioned in Leviticus is basically a cultic society centered on the tabernacle. The tabernacle is the place where the holy God is present, so it must always be kept holy. Second, dietary laws are emphasized for the sake of cultic holiness. In each cultic context, dietary laws are repeated. Third, the regulations for cultic holiness provide the basis for achieving ethical holiness. These ethical regulations result in the holy relations with God and the ethical relations with neighbors. Finally, the fact that Leviticus 18-20 is located in the center of the structure of Leviticus, and that the regulations, which appear in the ethical context, are repeated there, shows that Leviticus 18-20 is literally and theologically located in the center of Leviticus. As a result, the ethical regulations in Leviticus 18-20 are the most important factor which the Israelites must obey.
