The globalization and the wave of neoliberalism in the 21st century are causing the crisis of the ecosystem without origin by consuming finite resources and destroying the natural environment for profit creation. The acceleration of ecosystem crises across the globe makes people feel a sense of crisis about whether humans and other life forms are any longer sustainable on Earth. To solve this problem, human beings need to respect the complexity of living environment more and need the ability to understand the natural world and use it in everyday life. In this context, this study examines how to find alternatives by focusing on the concept of ‘shalom’ in the theological approach to the global environmental crisis, and proposes Christian education to cultivate ecological literacy as a method.
The ‘Shalom’ of the Bible means that humans enjoy peace in all relationships, and the realm of peace extends beyond mankind to the natural world, the creation world of God. Therefore, Christians facing the crisis of the global environment first recognize that the creation world created by God is the creature of God like man, and furthermore, it is necessary to stand in this position of the earth, not the human position. And as responsible actors, human beings should do their best to care for the creation world with the sovereignty given by God. To this end, the ecological literacy presented in one way means the qualities and abilities to understand and practice the core principles of God’s creation world, or ecosystem, in order to create a sustainable society and community. This ecological literacy can be an important competency in establishing a peace relationship with the global environment in which humans live and achieving a sustainable society.
Christian education that cultivates ecological literacy have to start from the perception of ecological paradigm. Human beings are the ones who have to communicate with the environment surrounding them, and peace is the state of harmony and coexistence in these various relationships. Therefore, arousing the diverse and complex relationships of human life, especially interdependence with the global environment, can be seen as the epistemological foundation of Christian education that cultivates ecological literacy. Based on the transition to ecological system thinking, it will be possible to create and spread sustainable peace culture when ecological conscience and style are fulfilled and ecological responsibility is fulfilled through ecological literacy education.
