This paper explores the interrelationship between modernist novels and ecocriticism. This paper analyzes the awareness of nature and ecological insight in Joyce’s “The Dead” through an ecocritical perspective, and sheds light on the importance of modernist novels as subject matter of ecocritical research. As subject of study for ecocriticism expanded from the boundaries of nature towards that of the environment, new ecological perspectives on modernist novels, which traditional ecocritical research failed to take notice of, were rediscovered. This paper, after exploring Joyce’s point of view on Dublin’s urban environment, discusses the urban environment exemplified by the gas/gas lamps, and the climatic element, the snow, within “The Dead” through an ecocritical perspective. Modernist novel is being developed into a new frontier for ecocritical research. Ecocritical imagination found in Modernist novels can be a foundation for more diverse and sustainable research on the relationship between humans, nature, and the environment.
