This study delves into a morpho-phonologically motivated vowel insertion which only occurs after a second-level derivational suffix is added in word-formation in English. The affixation of the second derivational suffix results in a marked tri-consonantal cluster where the second consonant is the adjective-forming first derivational suffix /-d/. This three-member consonant sequence is the canonical environment for a medial consonant deletion and this is assumed to trigger a vowel insertion in English. The inserted vowel before the first suffix guarantees the least marked first suffix /-d/ to escape from the consonant deletion trap. This is achieved by ranking *CCC over Dep-IO. The position of the epenthetic vowel is secured by the undominated Contiguity-DeriMorphs, which requires continuous realizations of adjacent derivational morphemes. The step-wise approach of the current analysis expects to have two different realizations as [-d] or [-t] of the first adjective-forming suffix. However, the suffix is identically realized as [d] because the first suffix [t], which is the result of progressive voicing assimilation, becomes voiced between the inserted vowel and the initial-sonorant of the second suffixes. This is implemented by Obst-Voi, which prefers a voiced obstruent to a voiceless one intersonorantally.
