Introduction. The current clinically available methods to regenerate infected/wounded tissues failed to recover the initial functionality due to the necessity of tissue removal from the infected area. To address this challenge, herein, we developed a nano-sized multifunctional bioactive glass (BG) with the ability to deliver copper, silicate, and calcium ions along with epidermal growth factors (EGF) at the same time to kill the bacteria and accelerate angiogenesis. Moreover, as-prepared nanocarriers exhibited remarkable osteo-odontogenesis in the infected pulp tissue of rat models.
Method. After synthesis and characterizing copper-doped BG (CBG), for the in-vitro part, angiogenesis properties of Cu-BG (CBG) and EGF-loaded BG (EGF@CBG) were studied with HUVECs cell. These nanoparticles (NPs) with various concentrations were cultured with hMSCs to assay the osteo/odontogenesis. Moreover, the antimicrobial properties of CBG against E. faecalis and E. faecalis/HUVECs co-culture conditions were investigated by PrestoBlue.
