During the Japanese colonial era in Korea, the Japanese Government-General and the affiliated Japanese Government-General Museum conducted a comprehensive survey of the history, culture, and natural environment of Korea. A vast body of archival materials was produced as part of their colonial efforts. The National Museum of Korea inherited many of these documents when it was established after the 1945 liberation of Korea and assumed the cultural assets and archival materials in the Japanese Government-General Museum, its Kaesong and Namsan annexes, and the Yi Royal Museum.
In particular, the documents, maps, floor plans, and gelatin dry plates from the Japanese Government-General Museum are considered invaluable unto themselves and have been designated as cultural heritage. Recognizing their importance, the National Museum of Korea has engaged in ongoing projects on organizing and publishing the documents, maps, floor plans, and gelatin dry plates from the Japanese Government-General Museum. The findings of such projects began to emerge starting in the late 1990s. Since the 2010s, the National Museum of Korea has made them available to the public through an online service. This online service enabled users to search for and download images that are only rarely reproduced as prints.
The development of technology and the increasing number of users has necessitated user-oriented advanced search functions, convenient image viewing, and high-definition data. To provide these functions, abundant human resources, considerable time, a large budget, and great patience are all required. The National Museum of Korea will continue to systematically organize its collections and related materials and fully open them to the public as it provides user-oriented online services. These efforts will promote further research results in various fields.
