The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the ways for youth sport promotion by using theoretical frameworks which are both sport development model and developmental asset. The authors created a new comprehensive framework to integrate sport development model with developmental asset concepts. With the use of the framework we conducted an empirical study to develop policy directions to develop Korean youth volleyball. Through Yin"s qualitative research method, 12 experienced volleyball players were interviewed. Interview questions were about the individual and environmental factors influencing youth"s volleyball participation in the stage of introduction, continuation, and advancement.
The results of the study are as follows. First, the initial stage of participation, it was important to manage volleyball program so that volleyball as sports could continue to be fun and interesting. Second, among the factors that have been continuously participating in volleyball since youth entered it, there ware internal motivation factors such as the joy of performing volleyball techniques correctly and the satisfaction of doing my favorite sports. Thirdly, as an opportunity to move from the youth level to the youth and adult level, the belief that volleyball can succeed was identified as a very important factor. Finally, we connected each different stage of youth volleyball system into the four developmental assets which are physical, intellectual, psychological and emotional, and social developmental assets in order to suggest the policy for the continued participation into vollebyall.
