Purpose
Patients with fecal incontinence show internal rectal prolapse frequently. The role of internal rectal prolapse in fecal incontinence is under debate. This study assessed anal sphincter function according to internal rectal prolapse grade in patients with fecal incontinence.
Methods
This retrospective study was conducted between January 2015 and December 2019. The patients who underwent fecal incontinence for over three months were enrolled. All patients underwent physician’s examination, anorectal manometry, transrectal ultrasonography, and defecography. The patients with anal sphincter injury and the patients with grade V internal rectal prolapse were excluded in this study. The patients divided 3 groups according to the Oxford rectal prolapse classification; No rectal prolapse group (NG), mild prolapse group (grade I, II, MG) and severe prolapse group (grade III, IV, SG).
