The Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum is one of the important resources that account for more than 80% of the production of shellfish aquaculture in the tidal flat of the west coast of Korea. However, its production has been fluctuate in every year due to that the Manila clam aquaculture depends on the seeds from naturally occurred spats. Therefore, in this study, we developed techniques of artificial seedling and intermediated culture of the Manila clam spats during 2017 to 2020 in order to improve the clam production. For the first step, to establish the technique of artificial seedling of the clam spat, the timing and location of the seedling were determined by surveying the clam spat resource distribution and its planktonic larvae occurring in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do. The surveying results showed that, natural clam spats were highly distributed in lower tidal zone about 900-1,100m far form the coast, and over 1,500 individuals/Ton of planktonic larvae (D-shape to pediveliger larvae) were observed from July to September. This result indicated that optimal timing and location of artificial Manila clam spat seedling in Boryeong is performing from early July to late August in the lower intertidal zone of the tidal flat.
