The purpose of this paper is to analyze the research trends and achievements of studies of Italian history in Korea published during the two years 2019-2020. In the past 20 years, the study of Italian history has grown remarkably, including the establishment of the Korean Society for Italian history, and the increase in researchers and their academic works.
Analyzing the research results of Italian history during the two years of 2019-2020, several significant features can be identified. The first is that research was concentrated in the Renaissance period. Second, studies of Modern Italy are few. Moreover, they treat not with the history of Italy itself but with a wider geographical category of Europe. Modern Italy was in many ways a period of decline.
From the point of view of specific research topics and contents, there are two imbalances. First, research has traditionally been focused on important themes in Italian history: the Renaissance, the birth of the modern, and fascism. Second, the study of Italian history is highly varied according to the periods. Compared to studies of the splendid and glorious times of ancient Rome and the Renaissance, those of modern and medieval Italy are very poor. Further, it is even more worrisome that there are no younger generations willing to study these eras.
