The purpose of this study is to investigate the retirement greeting expressions used in the conversation at the Korean retirement ceremonies by field research. Based on this, the usages are interpreted and analyzed by sociolinguistic variables including age, sex, religion, academic background, occupation, region, and so on upon classifying the subjects as seniors, peers, and juniors by primary survey and secondary online survey. People experience joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure facing various family events. There are two books published, ‘etiquette of Korean language by the Chosun Ilbo and the National Research Institute of Korean Language (1991)’ and ‘Standard language etiquette by the National Institute of Korean Language (2011).’ Because some people do not know what kind of retirement greeting expressions would be appropriate due to lack of education or PR, it is meaningful to investigate whether the retirement greeting expressions proposed in ‘Standard language etiquette’ were properly used. Moreover, few studies had been conducted on the retirement greeting expressions by online or offline survey with common people nationwide based on the field research. In this situation, it would be meaningful to review the usages of retirement greeting expressions in a sociolinguistic way, quantitatively. As a result of the analysis, the retirement greeting expressions presented by the Chosun Ilbo, the National Institute of Korean Language (1991:368), and the National Institute of Korean Language (2011:212) are not being used in our actual situations. This means that the proposed expressions need to be corrected and supplemented accordingly. If the speakers say they cannot use the retirement greeting expressions due to the lack of the knowledge, then the awareness and the education of the proposed expressions need to be promoted to the speakers nationwide.
