The purpose of the present study is to analyze Barack Obama’s inaugural speeches in 2009 and 2014 using CDA, adapted from Fairclough and Halliday, in order to provide examples for EFL/ESL learners’ language acquisition. By applying CDA to Obama’s inaugural speeches, the study attempts to discover how CDA can be used as a tool for EFL/ESL learners’ language acquisition. In doing so, the study seeks to detect how the purpose of the speeches was achieved in the description of political stance and the relationship between the linguistic features and social contexts. The study contends that Obama's speeches provide evocative and skillful employment of linguistic features which can be analyzed by EFL/ESL learners. Word Count Tool is utilized for quantitative analyses including the most frequently selected words as well as the number of word appearances. The study concludes that CDA application to political discourse is useful for EFL/ESL learners, and based on the linguistic findings of CDA results, the study suggests some guidelines for implementing CDA to benefit EFL/ESL acquisition.
