This study aims to investigate acoustic realizations of Korean stops in focused words produced by Chinese learners of Korean. Four Korean speakers and 20 Chinese learners of Korean participated in the phonetic experiment. VOTs of stops, vowel duration, F0 and H1-H2 were measured. Five results were found. Firstly, Chinese learners of Korean did not produce VOTs differently from Korean speakers in the neutral and focused words. Secondly, duration of the following vowel produced by Chinese learners of Korean was shorter than that produced by Korean speakers in focused words. Thirdly, in contrast to Korean speakers, Chinese learners of Korean did not differentiate lenis and aspirated stops in terms of F0 in neutral words and focused words. Fourthly, in contrast to Korean speakers, Chinese learners of Korean did not employ the bigger F0 range to indicate focused words. Fifthly, Chinese learners of Korean did not differentiate lenis and tense stops, and aspirated and tense stops in terms of H1-H2 both in the neutral and focused words. This study suggests that we need to put an emphasis on pitch to teach Korean stops effectively to Chinese learners of Korean.
