In this paper, I try to examine the expressive system of how to use different mediums such as <character> and <picture> to express the works of the national treasure “Genji Monogatari Emaki” which depicted “Genji Monogatari” In the past, this work was often introduced and interpreted in conjunction with the contents of the “Genji Monogatari” focusing on the expressiveness of the picture screen. However, the national treasure “Genji Monogatari Emaki” is a work that is alternated with letters (Kotobagaki) and paintings alternately. Therefore, there is a need to comprehensively examine the three expressive systems of the text of Monogatari, the letters of Emaki, and the paintings of Emaki. Each of the scenes was analyzed form 「Yokobue」 「Yadorigi1」 「Sawarabi」 「Minori」, and it was found that the text of the “Genji Monogatari”, the character of Emaki, and the picture screen were describing the contents in different expressions in the same or similar way. In particular, the national treasure “Genji Monogatari Emaki” shows uniqueness in portraiture, which is depicted differently from the actual age of the original work or depicted in an extremely small size, unlike the actual size. This is not merely a drawing based on the technique of Monogatari faithfully, but rather a reflection of Emmaki’s interpretation of the symbolism to express through the character. In this way, the national treasure “Genji Monogatari Emaki” makes use of the functions of characters and the functions of paintings to make new works different from those of “Genji Monogatari” while complementing letters and pictures and resonating.
