In East Asia, various types of measurement systems(尺度) were used to fit requirements of diverse situations. Joseon established measurement systems such as Ju-cheok, Hwangjong-cheok(黃鍾尺) and Pobaek-cheok(布帛尺), and used them accordingly in different situations. The former two, Ju-cheok and Hwangjong-cheok, were never used officially as a State measurement system[官尺] in China as they were considered to be more of an ideal system and not a practical one, but Joseon used them in various occasions nonetheless. For example, in Joseon the Ju-cheok system was employed in various tasks such as measuring the length of roads, the depth of tombs, the size of horses which were to be sent to Ming as tributes(“Gongma, 貢馬”), as well as creating astronomical instruments.
Previous studies have rather focused on determining the length of Ju-cheok that was used in Joseon, or explaining why its length was different from the length observed in China. Meanwhile, the question of where it was actually used received less attention than it should have. In this study, how it was employed in the creation of astronomical instruments, and of course why it was used in the first place, is the main point I would like to analyze. Because Joseon had no way to know what kind of measurement system was used in Chinese astronomical instrument production (and not to mention its precise length as well), Joseon had to improvise, and somehow came to use Ju-cheok in its own production of instruments for astronomical observation.
In the 14th year of King Sejong’s reign, Joseon embarked upon a grand task of creating its first ever astronomical instrument, but the project soon encountered its first problem. The model they were after was the Yuan(元) system, but the main reference for the Yuan system, which was the Astronomy chapter in Yuanshi(元史), had everything (including astronomical instruments’ structure and measurements) but the very measurement system it was based on. Joseon had to decide what system it would eventually employ, and the decision was made to use the Ju-cheok system. After they determined the exact measurements they should adhere to, by consulting Juja Ga’rye and using Shinju instruments purchased from Ming, they resumed production of Joseon’s first astronomical instruments.
