This study aims to present a new way of categorizing the meaning of modality, targeting the auxiliary verbs, ‘能(neng),’ ‘可以(keyi),’ ‘会(hui)’ that are shown in the Chinese drama “三十而已(Nothing But Thirsty)” and the teaching plan for modality auxiliary verb by using visual media.
First, the conversation section in which the auxiliary verbs, ‘能(neng)’, ‘可以(keyi)’, ‘会(hui)’ were used was extracted from the drama script, and new meanings are presented in this study other than the meanings already known. The auxiliary verb, ‘能(neng)’ indicates the meaning of ‘intention,’ ‘optative,’ and ‘unexpectedness’; ‘可以(keyi)’ indicates ‘proposal’; ‘会(hui)’ indicates ‘willingness’ and ‘unexpectedness.’
And then, the new meanings were presented in this study, and the relationship between each auxiliary verb and the existing modality system was examined. Some indications seemed to be derived from the existing meaning, and others that were out of the category of modality were also observed. Furthermore, through linguistic typology study, a similar case to the auxiliary verb ‘会(hui)’ having the meaning of ‘willingness’ was confirmed.
Lastly, this study presents the teaching plan for auxiliary verbs using visual media. Considering the characteristics of modality that have to consider various linguistic elements, the proper use of visual media can teach the modality meaning of auxiliary verbs more easily and intuitively.
