Today, many hold public education in less esteem, social bonds are weakening, and the gaps between region and social classes are deepening. To create a more sustainable society, it is indeed necessary to provide an environment for future education which considers the lifelong learning systems created by public education and local communities are as well as the identities of local communities. In this regard, this study examines the recent trend of museums evolving into multi-function complexes that provide education, activities, and communication, rather than simply housing spaces for the preservation and exhibition of relics. Museum education is significant for its social value as it contributes to accelerating social integration, narrow the educational divide, and building the identities of local communities.
Based on existing views of the social value of museum education, this study examines how museum education programs are appealing to and being received by their users and further explores social value of museum education programs. The main features of the education programs at the Buyeo National Museum are investigated and the results of a user satisfaction survey are analyzed. For each program, particularly active participants were selected for in-depth interviews to identify social values and the most appealing aspects of museum education programs.
The research revealed that museum education is fulfilling socially valuable roles as follows: First, it operates diverse education programs that meet the demands of local residents and provide opportunities for lifelong learning to the disadvantaged and to middle-aged and older people. Second, it helps participants to communicate and harmonize, eventually contributing to resolving conflicts between generations or between participants. It can also help local educational professionals who attend education programs to realize the importance of their duties. Third, through cooperation with public educational institutions in the local community, it can build a supplementary governmance system for public education and create positive effects for young students" development of a local identity.
According to the participants surveyed, museum education is attractive for various reasons and creates positive effects as follows: First, a favorable impression of the museum space and the authenticity of the exhibits make museum education appear more interesting. This indicates that museum education should take full advantage of the inherent features of museums. Second, playful activities combined with communication through cooperation creates synergy. Third, an emphasis on the historic remains of the local region cements the cultural identities of residents.
In particular, it should be noted that participants in museum education programs play an important role in the dissemination of culture as they spread the value of local culture within their communities and promote communication among the members through human networks. This study reveals how the participants understand the reflective nature and complex diversity of museum education and demonstrates the considerable trust placed in the museum. This indicates that participants in museum education programs recognize the status of museum as a cultural hub for their region that drives cultural governance.
According to the findings, this study indicates that museum education in the future should make greater efforts to play a socially significant roles by narrowing regional gaps and invigorating local communities, as well as serving as a supplement to public education.
