The purpose of this study is to analyze two courses of online educational content that were created after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and examine changes to the museum environment to propose efficiency and direction of online museum education.
Many museums started to focus the direction of their education to online from offline after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. However, traditional museum education is different from regular education in school. Museums provide education focused on interest and concern by stimulating the five senses with experience-and participation-based programs. it is extremely difficult to highlight these characteristics fully when museum education is shifted from offline forms to online ones. Despite these difficulties, however, some museums have succeeded in developing proper online educational content and programs that are becoming popular with many students. The main task of this study is to select two such courses to analyze and evaluate their educational programs.
The two museums that were chose for the study are the Peabody Museum of Natural History in the U.S.A. and the Tate Modern Museum in the U.K. Both are providing quality online educational content and are actively developing and running new educational courses. Running online programs for many years, they have accumulated rich and diverse educational content that would be of great help to South Korean museums to properly accommodate and proceed with necessary elements. The study selected and analyzed educational programs that could be essential to the efforts of South Korean museums to develop and manage courses online. These analysis efforts led to the identification of the characteristics of online and offline education programs and the data that is needed to develop new online education programs in the future.
This study will hopefully make even the slightest contribution to the planning of online education programs at museums and further make some contributions to the development and management of even more diverse educational programs at museums. The crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic will not be solve in a short time. Museums need to create more long-term plans and management measures. Online education will have a difficult time replacing offline education 100%, but it is also true that it is hard to expect plans other than online education. This raises a need for ongoing development and research efforts in the future for online education programs fit for museums. Everyone should work together to overcome this difficult situation and develop better educational programs.
