The Busan Museum, one of the definitive municipal museums in Busan, is marking its 40th anniversary this year. Since opening in 1978, it has been holding diverse exhibition, including international exchange exhibitions, to promote the history and culture of Busan among local citizens and people in other regions. With the establishment of an education and PR team in 2016, the museum has been working to create an image as a citizen-friendly museum with much to offer by holding diverse events and education programs. This article investigated the effects of museum education by analyzing the participants of "Dream Museum Class (hereafter, "Dream Class"), which has been operated for disadvantaged local children since 2015. The research data included the products of students who participated in the Dream Class over the last four years, questionnaires, and interviews with three lecturers involved in the program. Based on an analysis of the above data, this study investigates what effects can be expected from museum education programs for children at local children"s centers as well as the meaning of such programs. The first capter examines the challenges in the educational environment faced by low-income students and explored the opportunities and potential that art and culture education can offer to these students. Next, the details of educational programs for the disadvantaged run by the Busan Museum and the methods for collecting data on such programs were examined. The collected data were analyzed to see how the programs influenced the children at local children"s centers and the implications for museum education in the future. The results of this research are as follows:
First, the analysis of the pre- and post-class questionnaires revealed that students from the local children"s centers did not lact background knowledge on history compared to other the student population. However, the level of knowledge decreased in post-class questionnaires compared to pre-class questionnaires, which calls for furthe study. Second, the mind maps made by the students after the class proved that the ability to understand the themes of a class was similar between students from local children"s centers and those from the general population. However, students from the children"s centers were found to be freer in expressing their thoughts since they used drawings, paintings, diverse colors, and sentences in addition to keywords. According to the mind map analysis, these students took what they learned and made it their own. Finally, the positive experiences gained at the museum by students from the local children"s centers through collaboration with peers and close contacts with and compliments from teachers improved the children"s self-esteem. This can be cinfirmed in their expressions of creativity, positive attitudes, and relationships with peers. It is expected that this improvement in self-esteem will eventually impact the attitudes towards life expressed by these children.
