Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore structural relationships between Pilates instructors’ expertise, trust, coaching effectiveness and participants’ intentions to continue Pilates emphasizing the mediating effects of instructors’ trust on the relationships between ‘expertise and coaching effectiveness’ and ‘expertise and intentions to continue Pilates’.
Method: Research participants were 210 Pilates participants in eight Pilates centers. We assessed the validity and reliability of the measurement scales using confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, and correlational analysis. A structural equation modeling test with maximum likelihood estimation was used to explore structural relationships among variables in the proposed model and the mediating effects of instructors’ trust.
Results: The findings displayed the positive impacts of (a) expertise on trust, (b) expertise on intention to continue Pilates, (C) trust on coaching effectiveness, and (d) trust on intention to continue Pilates, and did not show the positive impact of expertise on coaching effectiveness. The findings further demonstrated that trust fully mediated the relationship between expertise and coaching effectiveness, and partially mediated the relationship between expertise and the intention to continue Pilates.
Conclusion: These findings show the importance of Pilates instructors’ expertise and trust in improving coaching effectiveness and participants’ intentions to continue Pilates.
