This paper examines the function of the mirror as the main material of “The Eighth Night” in Ten Nights of Dreams by Natsume Soseki. First, the mirror reflects the characteristics of one’s appearance and the character “me” who is very interested in people outside the barbershop. Second, in front of the mirror in the barbershop, one has no choice but to focus on the mirror, because their body is constrained and not free; one ends up having to concentrate on what is reflected in the mirror. The mirror reflects a person who pursues a splendid appearance or faces difficulties in life in a society where competition for survival is fierce—a reflection of “me.” Third, “The Eighth Night” is evaluated as a work of strong realism; it maintains the incomprehensibility of the dream that consistently flows since the first night due to the effect of the mirror.
