The purpose of this paper is to examine the religious characteristic of the cities in Western Zhou. Previous studies have seen that the main purpose of ancient Chinese cities is to acquire and maintain power. In other words, the city was recognized as a symbol of power and an instrument of power. The royal ancestral temples were located in the center of an ancient Chinese cities. Previous researches also viewed the ancestral temples, a part of the city, as a means for power. However, this paper pointed out the limitations of these studies through the concept of hierarchy. Louis Dumont analyzed the difference between hierarchy and power through the study of the caste system in India. He saw the essence of the Indian caste system as a hierarchical order of rank. The caste system is a system formed based on the religious values and ideas of Hinduism, and it is distinguished from secular power relations. This paper gained insight from his theory, and was able to recognize the importance of the concept of hierarchy. This paper developed a new discussion about the function of the cities of Western Zhou by applying the concept of hierarchy. The royal ancestral temples, the center of the cities do not serve for power, but function to generate hierarchies. Hierarchy is a concept different from physical power. Hierarchy refers to an order of status based on values. The ancestral temples were the source of such hierarchical order as the residence of the ancestor gods. This paper investigated the formation of the hierarchical culture of the royal ancestral temple through the analysis of the bronze inscriptions in Western Zhou, and tried to emphasize the religious character of the cities in the process.
