Biodiversity education in elementary school is increasingly emphasized from the perspective of the promotion of emotional connections with nature, value formation, and the development of an environmental ethic. This study explored five pre-service elementary teachers’ perceptions on biodiversity education with their past experiences and willingness to implement the biodiversity education in the future. Using a qualitative case study method, data from the pre-service elementary teachers were collected mainly from in-depth interviews. Inductive analysis was conducted using a continuous comparative analysis method based on grounded theory. Research findings show that pre-service elementary teachers’ current perceptions of biodiversity education are vague and disconnected. Five pre-service teachers all learned biodiversity through their educational courses but only one participant was aware that she had learned biodiversity education from teacher education curriculum. Most participants often could not relate their experiences with the concept of biodiversity or biodiversity education. Regarding the willingness to implement biodiversity education in the future, all research participants showed a situational willingness and some participants showed an individual willingness based on personal values or educational beliefs. The research findings highlight the significance of explicit biodiversity education for pre-service teachers in the teacher education curriculum.
