In this study, I would like to look at Zo, Za Yong"s activities, called the centerpiece of Minhwa(Korean folk paintings), and look at the Korean tiger materials he collected and investigated.
Zo, Za Yong(趙⼦庸, 1926-2000) is a Minhwa activist who devoted his entire life to establishing Korean identity through Minhwa. He discovered humor, pleasure, and ideals of liberty and equality from the nature and thoughts of Koreans and prepared grounds to support the Korean Cultural Arts Movement. As an architect, he suggested through a creative way for Hanok, the Korean traditional house, to be modernized. Also, in spreading Minhwa Movement to awaken the excellence of the Korean culture and restore the national identity, he revealed the existence of the belief in the origin of the Korean culture. Having realized that Minhwa is a beautiful genre of Korean traditional paintings that can impress the world, he collected and studied Minhwa in those days when Korea was culturally backward, revealed the originality and globalization of the Minhwa.
Zo, Za Yong considered magpie tiger folk paintings very important in our art history. In the late Joseon Dynasty, Zo, Za Yong thought that the streets of Korea were a large-scale tiger painting exhibition hall, so it was suitable for the status of the tiger country. In addition, because there is always a tiger in the mountain god, Zo, Za Yong was thinking which means that Korean has taken our own faith as a base even if he believes in religion from other countries.
