This article aims to provide an overview and analysis of research trends in the field of early Joseon history, which spans from the founding of the Joseon Dynasty to the Imjin Waeran, focusing on work published from 2021 to 2022.
The research trends of early Joseon history between 2021 and 2022 can be encapsulated in two phrases: ‘engaging in individual combat’ and ‘groping in the dark.’ First, “engaging in individual combat” refers to the recent trend of historians tending towards individual rather than collaborative research, a shift expected to further solidify in the future. To maximize the potential of such individual research, meticulous planning of projects and conferences is imperative. Furthermore, researchers need to take an interest in each other’s work and endeavor to engage in dialogue with each other.
Next, ‘groping in the dark’ characterizes the challenges posed by the diminishing efficacy of formerly relevant theories in explaining the history of early Joseon. Although a variety of novel attempts and inquiries have been sporadically launched, such efforts still have a long way to go to supplant existing theories. To encourage the potential of current explorations to come to fruition, keeping an open mind towards new perspectives is essential, even when their logic and evidence have yet to proceed beyond the rudimentary stage. In addition, this requires a commitment to the painstaking work of honing evolving arguments, no matter how tempting it is to succumb to impatience.
