This study undertakes a examination of royal textile imports and pattern preferences within the late Chosŏn Dynasty by leveraging 19th-century trade Item Lists (Muyeok Bal"gi) as primary source material. It categorizes the patterns of imported fabrics used for royal purposes and calculates the quantity of imports for each pattern in order to identify which patterns the late Chosŏn Dynasty royal court favored. An official interpreter engaged in interregional com merce managed the importation of fabrics for the Chosŏn royal court and it was well known to Qing Dynasty merchants and textile artisans that Chosŏn had different fabric preferences compared to Qing. Additionally, since customized production was prevalent within Qing"s textile industry at the time, the Chosŏn royal court’s requested fabrics could be produced and imported from foreign markets. According to the trade records compiled by officials and palace women, the patterns of the imported fabrics totaled 27 types. Among them, fabrics with Byeolmun[別紋], Jeopmun[楪紋], and Unmun[雲 紋] were imported the most frequently; these were chosen either to fulfill official purposes within the royal court or due to the diversity of pattern compositions. This demonstrates that fabrics imported from Qing during the 19th century represent the needs and tastes of the Chosŏn royal court. Notably, the practice of ordering fabrics for the Chosŏn royal court from foreign markets underscores the intricate relationship between the producer, intermediaries, official interpreter, and the royal court as consumers, highlighting the complex nature of the imported fabrics as a reflection of various intentions.
