The set of yebok (ceremonial robe) worn by the wife of Oejae Yi Danha (1625-1689), a civil official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), consists of a wonsam (ceremonial robe), a bongdae (phoenix- patterned waist belt), a yongjam (dragon-shaped hairpin), and a doturak daenggi (hair ribbon). The set is an heirloom, which is rare for costume cultural heritage from this period, and is in a good state of conservation in terms of form and color. However, it cannot easily be made public. Accordingly, this study attempts the virtual dressing of an avatar with images of the cultural heritage by using computer programs. In order to recreate the artifacts, the characteristics of their forms, sizes, materials, and patterns were investigated, and three types of cultural heritage combinations suitable according to age and marital status were examined on the basis of documents and records from the latter half of the dynasty. To realize the virtual recreation of the cultural heritage, the costumes were designed on the computer graphic programs Adobe Illustrator and CLO, and images of the binyeo (hairpin) were simulated in 3D by using Blender. Each of the items designed was opened on CLO and put on an avatar according to the three types of design. This study presents various dressing methods according to cultural heritage combinations by carefully examining the cultural heritage’ historical backgrounds. In addition, batchimot (inner clothes) were put on the avatar under the cultural heritage in order to recreate the voluminousness inherent to costumes, and ornaments were matched by interchangeably using diverse graphic tools, thus allowing for a more complete historical verification and recreation of traditional costumes. The processes in this study are expected to aid the field of historically verifying and recreating traditional costumes, and the results of the virtual dressing are expected to contribute to an understanding of the formal dresses of aristocratic women in the 17th century.
