Cognitive linguistics is one of the most under-researched areas among many linguistic fields because it focuses on the subject of ‘meaning’, which is difficult to theoretically capture. In cognitive linguistics, research is being conducted in a way of explaining ‘meaning’ based on the cognitive structures of ‘frame’', ‘schema’, ‘cognitive domain’, and ‘Idealized Cognitive Model (ICM)’. In this paper, we excerpted basic words related to ‘Up (上)’ of space from numerous vocabularies, collected some example sentences that are used metaphorically rather than the meaning of the original spatial concepts, and drew out image schemas by finding commonalities between them. In this paper, we divided metaphoric expressions related to the ‘Up’ of space into 4 groups and analyzed them: ① ‘Large amount is Up’, ② ‘All appearances are Up’, ③ ‘Good thing is Up’, and ④ ‘The beginning and the end of things are Up’. This study is of great significance in understanding the metaphorical expressions of the basic vocabulary, ‘Up (上)’, and we expect that this will help learners to speak Japanese naturally.
