This study examines the significance of smells in Joyce’s Ulysses, and the relationship between his literature and smell. Bloom in this novel conveys the smells of Dublin while wandering in the street. Sandymount Strand, a representative place that shows the smells of Dublin, is filled with all kinds of filth. The stench of Sandymount Strand reminds Stephen of his dead mother, and evokes antipathy against the church. Here, however, he represents the stench as art by creating poetry. Joyce does not divide the hierarchy of smells but rather mixes conflicting smells, and he produces an aesthetic effect from them. Joyce’s understanding of smell is based on the idea that smell is a primitive, irrational sense that expresses basic instincts, and that it has a strongly associative memory. Molly’s perfume is a symbol of the complexity of smell. Joyce pays attention to this complexity in the perfume, an aesthetic invention, and he breaks the religious and cultural prejudices of smell and sublimates the smell into art. What Joyce ultimately intends to show is to awaken the numbness of the Irish, and to show that smell is like a window that can express the inner world as a powerful tool for expressing artistic imagination and emotion.
