This study was based on a literature analysis perspective, with 252 articles as research objects, to analyze the basic situation, research trends, and shortcomings of online laboratory courses in Chinese universities under the background of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven specific questions were investigated, including research topics trends, subject distribution trends, journal source and level trends, research method trends, scientific research cooperation network trends, keyword co-occurrence network trends, and keyword clustering trends. The results showed that most attention during the COVID-19 pandemic was paid to experimental teaching mode research, with virtual simulation software being the main means for conducting online experimental teaching. Most of the research was conducted in the field of science and engineering, with little research in humanities and management, and a clear lack of research on experimental teaching in vocational colleges. The majority of the literature was published in low-level journals, with a small number of articles appearing in core journals. Research methods included case analysis, survey questionnaires, narrative research, and comparative research, with a tendency towards over reliance on comparative research methods. In terms of scientific research cooperation, many scholars did not form strong cooperation relationships or stable research teams, and there were no collaborative teams established between research institutions for experimental teaching. With the implementation of graded control measures for the pandemic, there was a lack of research on classified experimental teaching management. Finally, improvement strategies were proposed to provide guidance for future experimental teaching research.
