This article focuses on Russian identity as explored by Dmitry Likhachev (1906-1999), an internationally renowned scholar of the Old Russian literature. Academic consistently asserted that Russia is part of the West. This emphasis on Russia’s European character contrasts with the popular notion of Neo-Eurasianism that emerged in Russia since Perestroika and the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
It is well known that the dispute between the Westernizers and Slavophiles occurred in the decade from the late 1830s to the late 1840s, and it is central not only to Russian intellectual history but also to the history of Russian political thought. However, this long-standing debate was rekindled in earnest after the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2022.
When Western political scientists have pointed out that the concept of “nationalism” implicit in Eurasianism is similar to fascism, Likhachev’s assertion of Russia"s Western identity acquires a considerable political significance. The significance is to correct negative myths about Russian identity and to present a positive vision of Russia"s future in the 21st century. And this paper have attempted to demonstrate his forward-looking in such deliberate “patriotism.”
